A Special Edition Supervised by Fincher Himself!
Upon its release in 1995 (1996 in Japan), Seven quickly captivated audiences, creating a passionate fanbase even before the rise of social media. It was hailed as an addictive, game-like thriller with a controversial edge. The film dominated the box office in the U.S. for four consecutive weeks, grossing over 15.3 billion yen, and in Japan, it earned 5.78 billion yen. Worldwide, it became a massive hit, grossing over 50 billion yen (according to Box Office Mojo, 1 dollar = 153 yen).
The film’s greatest appeal, which still resonates today, lies in its relentless, tension-filled narrative that builds toward a shocking climax, topped off by an ending that defies expectations. To commemorate the release of Seven in 4K IMAX®, a new trailer has just been unveiled.
Set in a rain-soaked urban landscape, the story follows veteran detective Somerset (Morgan Freeman), who is preparing for retirement, as he is assigned to a series of gruesome murders unlike anything seen before. He partners with hot-headed rookie detective Mills (Brad Pitt) as they investigate.

The murders begin on a Monday with a chilling scene in which an extremely obese man is force-fed to death, and the word "GLUTTONY" is scrawled at the scene. The following day, the body of a prominent lawyer is discovered with "GREED" written in blood. Somerset, convinced that the killer is targeting those who represent one of the seven deadly sins—wrath, envy, pride, lust, sloth, greed, and gluttony—predicts that five more victims will be claimed. As the investigation progresses, both detectives become increasingly consumed by the case, desperately trying to prevent further murders, but they’re slowly driven toward despair. Who is the killer? And what is their true motive?
The film's ending has been met with mixed reactions, and there were initial discussions about alternative endings before its release. However, director David Fincher insisted on the current conclusion, solidifying its place as a cornerstone of his career. The special 4K IMAX® edition being released was personally supervised by Fincher, and it has been restored from the original negative.
In celebration of its 10th anniversary, Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar is also being re-screened in IMAX®. At Ikebukuro Grand Cinema Sunshine, where the film is shown with IMAX® Laser/GT technology, tickets have been selling out every day. With similar high demand expected for Seven, be sure to check theater listings early to secure the best seats!
